Lai (@bookoflai) is an award-winning illustrator and the founder of Studio Behind 90, a Kuala Lumpur-based creative studio specializing in commercial illustration. His work has been honored with the World Illustration Award, the Golden Pin Design Award, and the Indigo Design Award. Through his studio, he has collaborated with global brands, including Netflix, Snapchat, LEGO, and KFC.

Beyond his commercial practice, Lai is a dedicated advocate for the creative community and the co-founder of the Kuala Lumpur Illustration Fair (KLIF), an annual expo established in 2023. He has been judges for Bangkok Illustration Fair and Unknown Asia Japan.

Since 2015, he has developed the “Tiny Moving Place” series, an ongoing art project that explores the concept of home as a fluid, mobile space. By reimagining small vehicles as intricate, self-contained living environments, he emphasizes the philosophy of achieving a significant impact with minimal resources. His work has reached international audiences, with exhibitions held across China, South Korea, London, and Thailand. Through a blend of illustration, new media, and toy design, Lai continually challenges the boundaries between physical art and technology, often expressing his narratives through AR and interactive media.

Tiny Moving Place is a long-running art series that explores the balance between freedom and rootedness, through mobile tiny structures that hold places like cafes, hotels, and shops.

Started by Lai since 2015, the series grew from drawing simple vehicles to creating imaginative homes on wheels embodying the idea that we carry our sense of belonging with us.
